I am walking home in an unfamilar street when a dog appears beside me. I notice that it does not have any legs but instead its legs have been replaced by wooden poles. Sexsomnia (Sleepsex)
Using 11 case studies as a basis for their research, Shapiro, Trajanovic & Fedoroff (2003) use the term sexsomnia to describe a sleep disorder where people have been found to inititate sexual acts (masturbation, intercourse with partners or even sexual assault) while asleep. This complex behaviour appears to originate for most in nonrapid eye movement sleep but can occur at any time during sleep and can last for more than 30 minutes. Sexsomnia is different from sleepwalking in the sense that arousal is automatic, the person’s motor activities are more specific and restricted and a form of “dream thinking” is also likely to be present. Geomagnetic Activity and Dream Bizarreness
Lipnicki (2009) reported an association between local geomagnetic activity (GMA) and the bizarreness of dreams. Lipnicki analysed the dreams of a young adult male which were recorded over a period of 6 1/2 years. Dreams were self-rated for bizarreness on a 1–5 scale. At the lower end of the scale (1), dreams would be normal and representative of what would happen in reality. Dreams that were rated 3 could possibly happen but were unlikely. Dreams rated 5 and considered bizarre would be dreams that had no connection with reality and could never happen.
Lipnicki found that on days of low geomagnetic activity dreams were found to be significantly more bizarre than the dreams that were recorded on days of high activity. Continue >>

I find myself walking down a hill in a housing estate. It is late at night. As I get near the bottom of the hill I notice that a hedge is on fire. I run over and can see that it is in fact not the hedge that is on fire but a sun lounger near the hedge. I quickly run down to the swimming pool which is in the middle of the garden and start gathering water with my hands. I throw some water on the lounger which has no effect and only ignites the lounger next to it. I can see that the hedge is now also on fire. Continue >>

I am walking with my father and we discover an old building. There are some paving slabs lined up against a wall which look out of place. I accidently knock one over and and this starts a domino effect and slabs start smashing and falling all around us. We decide to run. After a while I stop and I look into the distance. I can see three Rangers fans walking around the grounds. I therefore believe the building to be a masonic hall or Rangers supporters club. The Rangers fans see us and run toward us. I am climbing a flight of stairs as the lift is not working. As I reach the top of the stairs I notice two footballers sitting on a bench and both appear to be injured. I seem to be on holiday with my family. I am staying in an expensive hotel or cruise ship. We are being filmed for a TV show or documentary. I am sitting at a table with my father who looks completely different to how he does in reality. I realise this however I accept that he is my father. A waitress or employee of the TV company comes over to our table. She cuts up the meat on my fathers plate so that he will not choke. This will ensure the TV company cannot be sued. How to Interpret Dreams: Expectation Fulfilment Theory
I have been recording my dreams in a journal for a number of years now. The main reason in doing so has always been for ideas and inspiration for my photography, however recently this has changed. I have never really felt the need to find out the actual meaning of my dreams and every time I attempted to interpret one I would never get very far (especially if I took the Freudian approach). For a time I also believed all dreams to be meaningless or at least random flashes of memory or thought all jumbled together. At least with this belief it meant that I did not have to make any effort to ever interpret them. Dreams and Stages of Sleep
Initially when we close our eyes we lightly drift in and out of sleep and can be awakened easily by external noise. Muscle activity slows down. The eyes move slowly and occasionally we see flashes of images which may be visual thoughts. There is also the possibility that we may be awakened suddenly by a sensation that we are falling or something similar. This is called stage 1 sleep. Continue >>
Hobson: Activation Synthesis Theory
This theory of dreaming was first proposed in 1977 by Hobson and McCarley. At the onset of REM sleep, random signals (known as PGO spikes) arise from the Pons (a structure located on the brain stem) and travel up the mid brain to the cortex. This stimulates the cortex and the brain tries to make sense of these signals or “noise”. There is no external stimuli so the brain creates dream imagery from this noise (internal stimuli). Therefore the theory originally suggested that dreams were in fact meaningless. (Hobson later revised his theory to acknowledge the possibility that dreams may have meaning).

I am in a hotel. I open a door and there is a baby or small child hiding there. It appears to be lost. The child is strange as it is acting more like a dog or toy than a human. I pick up the child by the back of its jumper and say to him: where is your mother? What are you doing here? I appear to be quite rough with the child and seem to be treating it as a soft toy. I put it down then pick it up again and the child has transformed into an envelope from the post office. I open up the envelope and there is a credit card inside. I appear to be in Dunfermline holding a tennis racket as I walk in town. I met up with an unknown man who may be M but I am unsure. We walk down a steep hill to an underground car park. Every time a bus pulled up at the bus stop a person behind me would convince me that the bus isn’t going my way. This became extremely frustrating and I eventually gave up. I left the bus stop and walked over to R. who was standing with two dogs. We decided to go back to our flat where I could phone a taxi. I am watching two woman playing tennis. I seem to be on the court as they try and start up a rally. The woman over the other side of the net is quite aggressive. I am standing waiting on the pavement with my mother and grandmother. My father is due to pick us up any minute. My phone rings and I answer it. It is my father, he tells me that something strange has happened to his van. The van is now a car and his left ear is connected to an aerial on the roof. As he is on the phone I hear a young child in the background. The child offers to climb onto the roof of the van (or car) and remove the aerial for him. This seems strange to me as my father is an aerial engineer. I receive another call on my phone. This time it is my sister. I find myself in a shop which may be a chemist. I am trying to find a soap condensing contraption. An old woman approaches me and offers me help. I pick up a towel / shower head invention from the cash desk. It is wrapped in plastic. I hold it in my hand for a short while but decide against buying it.
I now find myself in the street walking toward some stairs. A man is walking toward me. He is handing out comics or magazines. I recognise him so I think about asking him for his autograph. However, I let him pass without acknowledging him.

I have broken into a building or shop. The purpose of which is to try and replace an item in the shop’s window display. However, I realise that I am also there to steal a mannequin. The awkwardness of the dream takes over and I find it difficult to gain access. I manage to place a CD upright in the window from the outside. I think to myself that this act does not seem possible to me however I am soon distracted by the noise of others in the shop. I notice three other people are also trying to place items in the window display of the shop. After a brief discussion we all decide to join forces in an attempt to break the glass. This proves extremely difficult. We take a break and watch Rangers play Celtic on a large TV outside a pub. In the distance I can see a sign for Tbilisi and assume I must now be in Georgia. Dream Journal Entry: 28 May 2009
I find myself amongst mass panic and hysteria. There is an outbreak of some sort. People are being placed in quarantine. I am being ushered toward a security guard who examines my skin. He appears to notice blotches on my arms, however I somehow manage to convince him it is an unrelated skin problem. Therefore he lets me through to the safe area. Continue >>
