Statement

What you will find here are dreams, reveries and reflections, all of which have been staged for the camera in order to provide me with a photographic document of my imagination. There is no reference to time or place. These are by no means exact reproductions they are only approximations of intangible events. Dreams are metaphorical translations therefore nothing here is what it appears to be. I can offer no explanations as there is no need to understand anything you find here.

Kevin Wilson

I am a self taught photographer and started out in photography in 2001. I purchased a basic Pentax film camera while travelling in Australia in order to illustrate my writing and recreate some of the scenes and ideas from the dreams I was transcribing in a journal. On the way back from the camera store I wandered into Hyde Park and took the photographs for the series ‘the Concept of Chance.’ Shortly after this photography soon became the main focus of what I was doing. I began experimenting as I had discovered a way of recreating intangible events which previously had only existed in my head.

My original inspiration came from surrealist films and painting, especially the films of Luis Bunuel. This directly lead to my interest in dreams and the reason I started transcribing my dreams in a journal.

I do not have a preference for any style of photography. I try to keep things simple and I tend to concentrate more on the idea rather than on the latest equipment and technique. All my photographs are taken with basic equipment and normally in available light in my own living room. I rarely use studio flash. I use photoshop for post processing.

To me the text is as important as the photograph. I believe it is important to use whatever is necessary to get the idea across or the image out of my head. I am trying to recreate intangible events therefore they can only ever be approximations of the actual event and will never be exact. The use of text helps to tell the story or get across the idea or feel of the dream.

I sometimes try and create just one image from a dream such as ‘batteries in sausages.’ Sometimes I expand upon a thought that was in the dream, other times a sentence or words I remember from a dream. Sometimes I try and be more exact. A lot of the time it is just the dream logic that triggers everything and I expand upon that. Occassionaly I combine dreams. The pigman series is a combination of images from various dreams I have had throughout the years. I have simply grabbed images or ideas from a number of dreams and combined them all together into one long sequence. Although they are all separate dreams, they seem to have sewn together and flow like it is all one dream.

I was born in Fife, Scotland but currently reside in Edinburgh.
